Third Grade Science Standards
GLE'S GLE 0307.11.3 Investigate how the pitch and volume of a sound can be changed.
Checks for Understanding 0307.11.2 Use a variety of materials to produce sounds of different pitch and volume. 0307.11.3 Classify a variety of taped sounds according to their pitch and volume.
Standard Performance Indicators SPI 0307.11.3 Distinguish between pitch and volume. SPI 0307.11.4 Identify how sounds with different pitch and volume are produced.
Third Grade Math Standards
GLE'S 0306.3.4 Create and represent patterns using words, tables, graphs, and symbols.
They can use the onomatopoeia of words they made in their poems to see if they hear any patterns and if they put them in graphs they can tally the number of times they heard the word they chose.
Checks for Understanding 0306.5.1 Collect and organize data using observations, surveys, and experiments.
For this they can make of list of sounds that they hear from listening to the world around them.
You could use a FACT to organize the class into groups based on the different sound they hear in and out of the classroom. This would be a visual observation/graph.
0306.5.2 Construct a frequency table, bar graph, pictograph, or line plot of collected data.
From the list of sounds that they hear they can classify them in a frequency table or chart according to the sounds they hear. example= (machines, living things, and other sounds)
From their mystery sound experiment they can create a graph or chart based on the sounds they guessed correctly and the ones that they did not guess. They could even sort them in order from easy to hard sounds to guess.
State Performance Indicators 0306.5.3 Make predictions based on various representations of data.
For boxes with different items inside, they will have to shake the box and listen to the noise and predict whats inside.
Third Grade Social Studies Standards
Accomplishments 3.1.01 Understand the diversity of human cultures.
b. Compare cultural differences in various regions of the United States and the world.
We could talk about different cultures and what kind of music is played in different tribes around the world and the sounds you hear.
Spi's 3.1.spi.1. recognize some of the major components of a culture (i.e., language, clothing, food, art, and music).
Have them listen to different cultural backgrounds of music and compare them to what they listen too and how the sounds vary depending on rhythms they hear.
Tpi's 3.1.tpi.4. study, perform, or listen to music from different cultures.
Listen to music to realize differences in rhythm and changes.
Third Grade Language Arts Standards
GLE's 0301.3.2 Write in various modes and genres, including narration, literary response, personal experience, and subject matter content.
For this we will have them write poems about what they heard and tell whether or not they liked that sound or not.
0301.2.1Continue to develop basic listening skills necessary for communication.
Students will be required to use listening skills during directions and explanations of activities and concepts.
0301.2.2Continue to develop basic speaking skills necessary for communication.
Students will use speaking skills when sharing their discoveries and ideas with the rest of the class.
Checks for Understanding 0301.2.8 Use rules for conversation and verbal participation.
Tell them about the rule we have when we want to speak out loud
Also, tell them what they should be doing in the groups as they are speaking
0301.2.10 Participate in group discussions
They will talk about there poems they made
0301.2.2 Demonstrate the ability to follow three-step oral directions.
We will them directions that they have to follow in order to do the activity.
0301.2.4 Listen and respond to a variety of media (e.g., books, audio, videos).
We will play music, read from the book, possibly go outside and they have to listen to the things they hear or being said to the them.
0301.2.1Use established rules for polite conversation (e.g., take turns, ask questions) and attentive listening (e.g., do not interrupt, raise hands, face speaker).
Students will follow this when the teacher or classmates are speaking.
0301.2.4Listen and respond to a variety of media (e.g., books, audio, videos).
Students will be asked to reflect upon different videos and virtual activities seen during activities.
SPI's 0301.1.11 Rearrange and identify words in alphabetical order (e.g., lists, phone directory).
When creating their lists of sounds we could have them place the things they heard in alphabetical order.
